I'm Jules. I write Own The Peak, about one household's energy: mine. I live in a mid-1990s brick-veneer house in Berwick, a suburb on Melbourne's south-east edge.

In 2025 I took the gas out: reverse-cycle heating and cooling in place of the ducted gas, a heat-pump hot water system in place of the gas unit, induction in place of the gas cooktop. Then I put a large solar array and a battery on the house. Then I started measuring things properly, and found that the real value was not in the hardware. It was in the data, the control logic, the forecasting, and treating the system as something to operate rather than something to own.
